Graze – the European food and grills

I always wonder why French are so thin. Not that the Europeans, French or Italians don’t have their food with loads of olive oil or cheese thrown in it. I realise the idea is to eat your kind of food, in right mindset we focus on home grown grains and seeds and oils.

In India, everybody has access to an abundance of rich and delicious foods (that unfortunately have the side effect of making you fat) . At the same time, we know how we women and men too, as a matter of fact, are so obsessed about food and dieting. We love our culture, food, we insist on good food (read ghee laden, high calorie food) when a guest has come over. Yet the problem remains, nobody is ready to eat despite you efforts that have gone into cooking.

Watch a European cook or prepare his food and you’d be shocked at how little consideration they put into the amount of salt and butter they throw in their concoctions. Yet, in spite of eating such calorie-dense foods, French people will eat fewer total calories than us, without even thinking about it.

Maybe you’ve read the book “Eat, Pray, Love or have seen the movie. There is this dialogue that most represents this food angst that I’m talking about is from the movie Eat, Pray, Love, when in the Barber shops Italian people discuss these cultural differences.

Julia Roberts: I feel so guilty. I’ve been in Rome for three weeks and all I’ve done is learn a few Italian words and eat!”
Man on Barber chair: “You feel guilty because you’re American! You don’t know how to enjoy yourself!
Julia Roberts: I beg your pardon?
Man on Barber chair: It’s true. Americans know entertainment. But they don’t know pleasure… I’m serious. Listen to me! You want to know your problem? Americans… you work too hard, you get burned out! Then you come home and spend the whole weekend in your pajamas in front of the TV! But you don’t know pleasure… You have to be told you’ve earned it! You see a commercial that says “It’s Miller time!” and you say… “That’s right! Now I’m going to buy a six-pack! And you drink the whole thing and you wake up the next morning and you feel terrible! But… an Italian doesn’t need to be told. He walks by a sign that says “you deserve a break today!” And he says, “Yeah, I know. That’s why I’m planning on taking a break at noon… to go over to your house, and sleep with your wife!” (laughs).

I’m sure, the quote might sound a little quite out of context, but I think you understand what I’m trying to say…

We Indians are also typically like Americans. In the stressful lives of ours, we have forgotten to enjoy anything. There is no point about obsessing over food or dieting or anything. One must not have so much guilt over food, instead, we should learn to enjoy ourselves when we actually indulge, and then forget about it. Think about food and enjoy it when it’s time to eat, and then enjoy the rest of your time not thinking about food but being where you are.

The other day I had the Opportunity to have European food at Graze, Taj Vivanta and what a leisurely time we had. The chef SelvaRaju is the head chef of all the restaurants of Taj Vivanta and his experience is wide and varied in his field. He is a master at what he does.

And here, I did not need to plan my menu but I had an amazing treat waiting for me. The chef SelvaRaju had already prepared and curated a menu for us and we just had to go on with the flow. Here’s my experience of the supper.

ThinkBig 2016 Summit- Asia’s largest summit for women entrepreneurs

If you can dream it, you can achieve it.- Zig Ziglar

Investing in women’s economic empowerment is an investment worth millions as it sets a direct path towards gender equality, poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth. Women make enormous contributions to economies, whether in businesses, on farms, as entrepreneurs, or working as employees from home or in industries.

WEConnect International’s fourth annual ThinkBig Summit is Asia’s largest women entrepreneurship and economic empowerment platform. The main goal of ThinkBig 2016 was to connect women-owned businesses with public and private sector opportunities that could dramatically impact the growth of their businesses. The Summit enabled almost 4,000 dynamic participants to engage in two days of inspiring and interactive sessions.

This is Asia’s largest platform for women entrepreneurs connecting women owned businesses with public and private sector opportunities.

This is an age of innovation, ideas, initiatives and knowledge exchange. #Thinkbig #weconnect gave an apt platform to network, share knowledge, and get to understand the know-hows of business.

Bangalore saw the women entrepreneurs come together like the roaring waves of the ocean at the thinkbig summit 2016. This path breaking initiative was organised by WeConnect International and supported by government of Karnataka. This thingbig summit is surely one which would be remembered by all and appreciated for providing an apt platform to women entrepreneurs where they got a chance to connect, learn, network, Exchange information and ideas, about the latest schemes that have been taken out for the economic upliftment of women. The various panel discussions which were held over a Period of two days were extremely informative and useful. Women joined this summit which almost seemed like a movement for economic development globally. We could see that women from all over the world and our own country, including tier two and three towns, also joined the summit, thereby making it a complete success. This platform served as a source to very many useful informations. ThinkBig saw the launch of the website of ‘Karnataka ladies Association and manufacturers Park’ ( K -lamp) to boost the business prospects of women from Bidar, Yadgir, Bellary, Raichur, Koppal and Gulbarga.

Another programme for women with no previous entrepreneurial background, for start ups was also unveiled, where the IIM-B will give a capsule course to the chosen bright ideas for start ups and this is backed and sponsored by Goldman Sachs, as announced by the CEO of Goldman Sachs, Bunty Bohra.

There were seminars and various panel discussions on such programmes which are there to support women entrepreneurs . The idea of the discussions was to enlighten about what measures are being taken for the upliftment and how they could use it if they have knowledge of the same.

In fact UNDP also threw light on its project Disha which is the new and innovative idea. It is an effort to tackle lack of information, direction regarding entrepreneurship in the segments of our society where Internet and access to knowledge is restricted and less. So the aim of the project is to give right information to the right people by guiding them to right direction, at right time, thereby enabling them to become successful in their endeavours which they otherwise don’t for the lack of information.

To empower women entrepreneurs government of Karnataka is coming up with four exclusive women’s parks at Ramnagar, Bellary, Gulbarga and Dharwad. These are planned keeping in mind the requirement of women entrepreneurs. These will be equipped with the state of the art civil, financial and social infrastructure as announced by CM of Karnataka Sri Siddaramaiah. State government also offers 50 % grant for Sc/ST for setting up industries.

Weconnect International certifies and gives the “women owned businesses” a recognition and also connects them globally. Hence WeConnect , ThinkBig summit provided a right approach and also a platform for the public-sector, government sector, private companies and industries and entrepreneurs to come together and look for sustainable way to bring social and economic empowerment of women for complete transformation. The panel discussions on building partnership, on economy and technology, on human rights and business ethics, were absolutely mind-stirring as so much of knowledge exchange and Idea sharing happened in these dialogues among the Panelists and the global audience. Everybody, from grassroots level to the creamiest layer., had something to ask, inquire, suggest and talk about.

There were discussions where personalities like Lalita Kumaramangalam, who is the chairperson of National commission of women, Elizabeth, the CEO of Weconnect international, Bunty Vohra, the CEO of Goldman Sachs, Jenny Grieser who is the senior director for women’s economy empowerment for Walmart, Dr. Priti G.Adani, chairperson for Adani foundation, Ratna Prabha, addl. chief secretary of government of Karnataka, were actively pronouncing and delivering messages and supporting the cause of the coming together for this summit. The representation from IKEA, AWAKE and also many other NGOs was also there in strong number.

The presence of big names like the Amazon, Shop clues, Walmart, the various consulates from world over, the specialists in their fields and a lot many from every walk of life made it a very successful and fruitful event.

The beautiful cultural shows by artists from various states and parts of our state too made it a very colourful event. Women from smallest of towns and villages, from the self help groups, to the biggest of industries, everyone enthusiastically participated in putting up exhibition and stalls of their products

Hence WeConnect ThinkBig made it an apt ground to solve, resolve, suggest, network, connect and evolve for women in business and otherwise. The smiles on so many faces make me more modest, the success stories of women from Rural backgrounds inspires us and stories of women who go on struggling without any support and despite failures, is something that commands respect from every woman who is Cocooned, loved and respected and inspires us to take a path breaking initiative to extend the similar support to such people who don’t get any. For with rights also come duties, if you have right over something then you also are obliged towards someone.

I am proud to be associated with the WeConnect international and ThinkBig 2016 as the blogger for the event. It makes the belief of a she in herself stronger for the ones who are unsheltered, unprotected and yet the Shakt, the inspiration. At this Summit, women took back knowledge, networks, ideas with them along with the belief of dreaming big, thinking big, and acting big with the ThinkBig 2016.

I will be posting the video chats with a lot many of women entrepreneurs and influential personalities hereafter.

Junior chef Pari

The kitchen is a very fascinating place for children. They see their mother working and dishing out delicious recipes for everyone in the family. The smell of good food being cooked, the steam coming out of pots intrigues them and interests them. It’s always like a mystery for the kids where they want to figure out what concoctions are being made.

We must give kids a chance to get involved in household chores, if they are younger then they can set up the table, or may be, get you a glass of water. And if the kids are old enough then you can make them bake or they could help you with making desserts etc.

My little girl, Pari had been insisting to bake for quite some time so what better day than children’s day to choose. The points to be taken into notice are-

Right time of the day matters

When you are trying to do any sort of activity with the kids you need to see that they should not be really tired or irritable, else they won’t be able to enjoy the activity. I chose forenoon when anyways they need to snack on something before lunch on the days they are home. Also this time of the day they are fresher and more energetic too. It’s also a smart idea to have another adult in the kitchen to help you keep an eye on your junior chef.

Organise

Always plan a little ahead and be ready with the ingredients . A little planning will save you and the kid from frustrating. So it’s a good idea to know what your little chef plans to cook and keep it simple. The ingredients should not be more than maximum five in order to keep it easy n interesting for the junior chef. It’s always a good idea to make muffins or such things with them.

Hygiene

It does work wonders when you cook with them as they naturally imbibe the good habits of washing their berries or fruits or whatever ingredients are needed for the cooking. They learn while they enjoy and cook.

Safety rules

The kids must know that they are not supposed to whirr the grinders or the electric beaters etc. They must understand at all point of time it is unsafe so it’s a good idea to always repeat and tell them that they need to stay away from sharp objects like knives.

Relax n be patient

Loosen up since kids cannot be counted onto being neat in the kitchen. Even as adults, we make a little mess, so, much mess is expected while your junior chef is at work.Always Be kind and patient with kids and older people. Lastly, be more appreciative about the kid’s efforts. It goes a long way in building their belief in themselves. A mother can give a kid a lifetime of self assurance which no adversity can snatch from them even when they grow up.

My daughter and her friend on this children’s day cooked some cheese and pesto straws. Pari was insisting on baking these for quite some time and she had the recipe from the book her grandma had gifted her. So here goes the recipe

Taste of Puglia- Sheraton Grand Gateway

Bene, the Award winning signature Italian Restaurant at Sheraton Grand Bangalore Hotel at Brigade Gateway offers an exclusive range of divine Italian food. Presently the Bene is hosting traditional, rustic south Italian food festival called the “Taste of Puglia” and it will go on till the 13th of this month. Chef Giuseppe is the Head Chef at Bene, Sheraton Grand Bangalore Hotel at Brigade Gateway’s signature Italian dining venue. An enthusiastic and pioneering chef, he brings his diverse expertise to the culinary aspects of Bene for this food festival with his specially curated menu which is so typical to homes of the south of Italy.

The Sundays see a lovely concept of laying the Grandma’s table wherein a table for 18-20 people is laid and is loaded with delicious delicacies. You may not know a lot of them but this is how traditionally Italians in their rustic set up used to get together and eat, drink and make merry, singing out songs and playing instruments and occasionally dancing. The idea is to make merry and open your heart and senses.

Chef Giuseppe Lioce is truly an Italian by temperament and we had a lovely time interacting with him. We were invited by the very warm team of Brigade gateway for a lavish lunch and the chef created a unique experience for us with his jovial attitude and we struck a special camaraderie and he truly enlivened the dining experience at Bene. He served us some of his signature dishes but we had to start with a Chardonnay and some fresh olives stuffed with almonds which are specific to Italy. Signature bread was also served with Bene dips and olive oil.

The restaurant has a characteristic Italian/Californian style in contrast to the traditional Italian décor set in cheerful colors with natural wood and stone in a functional yet modern design.

Once you are there you choose from an impressive array of appetizers and salads, soups, pastas, pizzas, cheese, hand crafted by the Italian Master himself Chef Giuseppe Lioce all of which are impeccably flavored and are made from the freshest local ingredients together with fine imported Italian products, authentic recipes with innovative and exquisite presentations. We also did a tour of the herbs that were grown there itself for the fresh aroma it imaprts to the food. The menu features a wide selection of traditional Italian dishes along with creative house specialties with the famous Pizzaiolo, Pizza Bar that helps the guests in selecting the pizza of their choice while they have a sip of their favorite beverage.

It was a fine dining experience with lovely music playing, wine n food in ample, cheer in the air and laughter riots amongst us.

The French windows invite people into the restaurant with action, music and aroma from the open kitchen and bread ovens. Natural light, windows with a view, large and picturesque botanical arrangements and the opening to the outdoor terrace accentuate the fine Italian experience.

Bruchetta pugliese – homemade PUGLIA BREAD and its topped with fresh cherry tomatoes from the terrace of sheraton itself. Then it has sundried tomatoes, shaved aged parmesan cheese, extra virgin olive oil and argula leaves to imaprt that fresh flavour. This was one of the appetisers we began with.

Polpettine di zucchine- this is again an appetiser which is zucchine fritters served with chili tomato sauce and dry olives from Bari.

Panzeroti pugliesi- this is like mini folded pizza and it was so soft and deliciosly filled with stuffing of burrata cheese and tomato and basil. This just melted in my mouth.

Cavatelli alla pugliese- this is again homemade cavatelli pasta and it also looks easy to roll out but really,no. this is cooked in rich basil pesto, black olives, sundried tomatoes and creamy burrata top it and slurp. So we had two kinds of pasta, one in veg and another in non veg selection.

Orecchiette al ragu- this is homemade orecchiette pasta which chef told me how to make and is usually made in every household of Bari and I tried my hands at it. This is traditionally slow cooked with lamb ragout and left on the flame for hours together as Sundays church would keep women busy and as they come home it is already done. Then it is topped with pecorino cheese and enjoyed as a Sunday meal by all and one together. This was amazing and I love my experience of trying to roll it out, though unsuccessfully.

pollo alla pugliese- this is chicken cooked in casserole with rosemary, fresh tomato, potato and grilled onion, and served with fresh salad.

Cocule- these are potato dumplings baked in oven with chili gravy tomato sauce, topped with salted ricotta cheese shavings and spinach.

Volvo S90 : Redefining the idea of luxury

The 2016 Volvo S90 has been quite the highly awaited offering from the automaker, which was finally launched on Friday with much aplomb and aesthetics.

We Were delighted and very thrilled to have been invited for the same event and launch party and it was an experience of its own kind. Both of us were flown and the hospitality at Hyatt was amazing as we were very well taken care of.

It indeed was a star studded evening in the presence of imposing, news making, wave creating Bollywood’s Big B and Jaya Bachchan and the charming Abhishek Bachchan. The launch happened at the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai, in the open lawns under the starry sky, canopied beautifully for the event.

The event was made extra special by the launch of first western collection by none other than the most artistic and awe inspiring duo- Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla.
The beautifully done up runway was an art in itself with the backdrop of trees laden with snow and as the models embarked their walk on the runway, they were playing like beautiful birds romancing sensuously around trees and then did they start walking the ramp one by one with the soft music and light textured feathers & feminine fluidity of form was totally accentuated. The theme was birds and we could prominently see it in the western clothing line launch of Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla.

The capes in feathers and other fluid materials like lace etc with trails and the shorter capes too gave the perfect feminine form an aura of royalty and magnificence, with a hint of superiority that a woman in control enjoys due to her form and beauty, that is unique to the gifted gender , ie, womanhood. The colours were black n grey to start with and then followed the pristine whites. It gave an impression so angelic and pure !

The ramp, the music and the models, the collection of clothes showcased , all was giving an ethereal and ecstatic feel. It almost seemed like a piece of paradise on earth for some time.

And finally the fabulously classy Shweta Bachchan Nanda enthralled the audience as she walked the runway with elan and poise, and artistically etched the drama on stage with movements which were so telling and mesmerising.

This was definitely the moment when the Big B himself was so thrilled to see his daughter and the pride and happiness on his face was oh so unmissable. It was adorable. I could just totally relate to it for this reminded me so much of my mother.

The showstopper was the Scandinavian beauty which combines Swedish technology, the Volvo S90. It was driven and stopped on the center of the stage with aplomb and its elegance totally complemented luxury, unmatched and unparalleled.
Volvo S90, the launch of this beauty in the most aesthetic way is an expression that evokes a high sense of elegant refinement. Underneath the crisply sculpted exterior lies a new chassis that delivers the perfect combination of precise handling and welcome effort. Volvo S90 definitely is designed to deliver a higher grade of luxury.

It has 3 – point safety belt and side impact airbags- inventions that have saved lives and changed automotive history thereby valuing people. It has intuitive senses and its intelli safe innovations support you while you are driving. The Volvo S90 has been designed around you.

Volvo in India with prices starting at Rs. 53.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Swedish carmaker’s flagship sedan in India competes with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Jaguar XF. Review of the same will follow soon.

Two days in the outback farm at Bannerghatta

Friends today is Karnataka Rajyotsava and I was born in this state and have spent a great amount of my early childhood in jungles and Mysore so I’m in love with namma Karnataka. This is my experience from my recent excursion and my photography of wild life in Bannerghatta .

It was a cold misty morning of the October. I along with my grandad were in front of the Toehold office waiting for the force traveller to arrive. As soon as it came, I hopped onto it. I stuffed my suitcase in the dickie and placed my bag pack in front of my seat. Soon the force traveller zoomed away, taking us past fields, villages and some vegetation. Soon we entered the gate of Bannerghatta or Ragihalli forest. We opened the window to get the aroma of the lush, green forest. We soon reached the Outback Farm.

Sandwiched between two hills, it was a haven for birds and wildlife. We soon entered the farm. It was a lovely, cozy farm with a small lake, three rooms, an activity centre, a kitchen and a really interesting bird hide. We were introduced to our rooms and were allowed to freshen up.

After an hour or so all of us collected in the activity centre. We were first introduced to the place by Phillip, our camp mentor. He talked to us about the flora, the fauna, the birds and the photography opportunities you would get in the farm and the surrounding forests of Bannerghatta. He told us about Bannerghatta being the closest forest to any major city to house elephants, leopards and tigers in the world. We then looked around for the signs of the animals and put up camera traps there hoping to catch a sight of a leopard, a porcupine or the elusive pangolin.

We later had our lunch and were ready to go for some bird photography. It was around 3 and the bird activity would start getting higher at the time of the day. We armed with our photography equipment headed towards the bird hide. The bird hide was kind of a shed which had holes on either side to put out our lens and transparent glass to look through. This helped us observe and shoot birds without disturbing them. We got to click photos of a variety of exotic birds. We saw many bulbuls, white eyes and munias. We were also lucky to see the rare tickellblue’s flycatcher and the white browed bulbul. I also got a chance to use Phillip’s huge 500mm lens. It was certainly one of a kind experience.

We later were ready for bonfire. The warmth of the bonfire gave us some relief from the cold nights of the October. We played many games, had our dinner and went to sleep. The next morning we woke up to the sounds of the birds. It was a new day and a fresh start to something new. It was morning and the best time to spot birds. Therefore we spent our time in the bird hide aiming to get a glimpse of a few more birds. We were this morning really lucky to get a glimpse of a mongoose.

We later had our breakfast and put on our baits. Yes, it was time for angling. I managed to catch a carpe. We released it back without harming it. After a while of fishing Phillip decided to take us to Tattekere or the ‘plate lake’. Why the name? It’s because the lake was flat, as flat as a plate, and in Kannada Tate is plate and Kere is lake. The lake was popularly known as the ‘Kabini of Bannerghatta’ due to the elephant activity here. After a time of clicking landscape pics of the lake we retreated to the farm and had our lunch.

After having lunch we rested to save our energy for the hike to the top of ‘Doddabetta’. Doddabetta had been Phillip’s favourite place in Bannerghatta and therefore he had decided to take us to the place. We left the farm at 4 in the evening. We started hike at 5 passing through evergreen forests, dry deciduous forests, elephant territories and leopard territories. We managed to spot a black capped oriole and tiger pug marks on our way up.We finally reached the top. The view from the top was amazing. We managed to spot a lot of birds at the top. We saw loads of swifts, raptors and swallows. We also spotted a lark and heard the calls of the elusive yellow- throated bulbul. We got amazing landscape shots. On our way back we managed to see a nightjar. I got amazing pics of it. We enjoyed our bonfire where we made and devoured our own s’mores. However it soon started pouring badly. We decided to call it a day. The night Phillip slept in our room as it was on the edge of the forest and a few were feeling scared to sleep alone. It was finally our last day which we spent angling. We also saw an olive keelback killing a fish. We soon bid goodbye to the farm, Phillip, Samantha and the Rosses. It was time to go back home with the amazing stories of our camp. It was a memorable experience which would remain in my memories forever.

I hope this Diwali you also realise what responsibilities you have towards your environment and how many birds and animals die due to noise and sound pollution. So let us keep safe our beautiful nature and the various wonderful spectrums of our Mother Nature. Jai Karnataka !!

Marriages are made in heaven and designed in Weddingline studio, JW Marriott Bengaluru – your guide to all things weddings

It was a brilliant Saturday noon and the launch of  first weddingline studio, the first one of it’s kinds in bangalore, at JW Marriott Bengaluru. And none other but Mrs. and Mr. Boman Irani were there to inaugurate the studio. The event was a glitzy affair and the stardust was making it even more glam along with the alluring interiors of the studio, surely making this studio The one and only destination for anybody who plans to tie the knot.

Weddings are special and it is the occasion for everyone in the family to celebrate, to cherish and make it a treasured memory for the bride and the groom. It is this dream that would be turned into reality in the most unflinching manner and fashion with aplomb and grandeur and the weddingline studio would make this responsible celebration an affair to remember for the families involved, for the bride , the groom and and every guest on the list.

It doesn’t end here, since the weddings are all about communication , the understanding of the ideas from conception to eventually the delivery of the whole affair , hence there was another story too weaved beautifully in this fabric of communication and conception. And communication matters everywhere so the unique concept of this studio is that the team of directors also took a socially responsible step by deciding to support the NGO Vani by donating a part of their profits to charity. Vani is working for the upliftment and betterment of the deaf children and it is here where communication should never stop for a few unfortunate ones due to lack of association and right amount of emotional and financial investment. This is where the wedding line studio extends its arms and hugs and contributes to pull out the deaf from the darkness of eerie silence…

Soon after this we headed to the sprawling lawns of the JW Marriott Bengaluru for the annual cake mixing event that happened in a grand manner. The staff of the hotel came marching forward with handful of trays of fruits, dry fruits and alcohol for the cake mixing. We all had an immensely satisfying time mixing the cake and soaking it up with all the stuff. The aroma of the resplendent alcohol was so sharp that it stayed with me even when I left. One of the chefs dressed as wizard came to sprinkle the spices finally and it surely felt like Christmas. We all wore the red aprons and the cute lil Santa caps as we did the cake mixing. What a festive noon it was!!

The lunch was a grand spread of all sort of grills , pan fried, Chinese delicacies et al. All sort of delicacies from everywhere in the world were served and the hospitality of JW Marriott Bengaluru is unmatched. Garad Silk – festive look -2 for the season

Shubh dashmi and today as we celebrate the final day of Durga Puja or navratris, I thought of wearing a sari from my mother’s collection of beautiful silks and hence I chose the traditional Garad. If you thought white color is only reserved for serious occasions then you better have a look at this post.

Garad (also known as Garod) silk is one of the popular styles of saree that has its origin in West Bengal. Also known as Gorod, the word Garad means ‘White’. Garad silk sarees are distinguished by its red border and small paisley motifs. Silk fabric used to weave Garad sarees is not dyed which keeps the purity factor of the fabric intact and therefore these sarees have a sacred importance to the women in Bengal. The color white is regarded as a symbol of purity; hence women prefer to wear a Garad Saree for special occasions and religious ceremonies. This garod silk has its position fixed as pristine part of any Pooja due to no adulteration. This is also worn on Sindoor tritiya or gauri Pooja on third day of navratris.

In east of India, including Bihar, Benaras and Allahabad, it is considered that during Puja no stitched clothes should be worn n hence these saris are traditionally used without fall although in modern parlance these things don’t hold so much of importance. Garad silk is made up of mulberry silk or tussar.

Garad also comes in tussar. Traditional Bengal tussar sarees come in the natural shades of beige or cream with a coloured border and pallav, and floral and paisley motifs woven across the globe. Tussar silk also forms a great canvas for kantha embroidery, where the plain fabric is colourfully adorned with embroidered patterns to form the borders and pallav of the saree. My sis-in-law is wearing a tussar Garad again from mom’s collection. The exotic weave makes it completely elegant. So grace the air with your presence in Indian handloom, silks of India.

Garad has shown its impact on fashion runways and in Bollywood equally. Designers like Neeta lulla, Soumitra Mandal etc have showcased Garad on the ramp in beautiful manner.

You can team it up with a brocade blouse and gold jewellery to give a perfect look for any festive occasions, be it festivals or wedding or anywhere else.

So girls time to explore in mom’s wardrobe for some rich heritage and traditional saris and make some waves, time to grace the air with some charm…

Unwind on Sunday so that Monday blues don’t hit you

Are you too getting scaries on the idea of a Sunday coming and just giving way to the Monday with hardly any activity done. Yes it happens to a lot of us, the Sunday getting over and no chores done to prepare you for the grind of the coming week; or sometimes, it’s the other problem altogether, my Sunday flies off as I’m only trying to meet up the unfinished work of the week bygone and I don’t even realise when it’s evening and my family time is totally killed.

It happens a lot of times and it leaves us more anxious and thus I get the Monday blues when I’m in no mood to wake up n send my kids to school too for the fact that Sunday was too hectic doing homework for them or we got so busy socialising that we never got to spend any time together as a couple in the absence of the others.

Then it also happens to many, that the Sunday mornings are sometimes very long and day starts so late and you already feel exhausted even after having slept for such long hours, due to PDA ( post drinking anxiety) and drowsiness hitting you so hard that u only realise that half of the day is already over as you wake up.

The only comforting fact is this kind of Sunday scaries and anxieties, not being ready for the hectic week ahead and not feeling that you got a fulfilling family time and yet the Sunday got over too soon, blah, blah, is universal- period. So let’s stop worrying and rushing into things and try to deal with this. If we stick to a few basics then probably the Sunday’s could be more relaxing coupled with more productivity too.

Sleep but not too late

I can go on sleeping when it’s a Sunday morning and, like a lot of us, even I’m averse to waking up to alarms (which increase my heart palpitations, let me confess), unless it’s my little girl who would anyways manage to wake me up with her lullabies which she loves to sing to me (I know you are wondering that a lullaby is supposed to make you sleep but what do u do when she keeps on giving you a loving slap or two while she sings out to you). But, believe me, waking up and seeing Pari’s face makes my day. So Sleep but start your day that late, recently I have been sleeping in but just an hour or two late so that I still have time to catch up on the day without letting it slip and get over. Moreover the body clock takes a while to settle with different sleep n wake up timings on different days of the week.

Allow some leisure time on weekend

Always keep your morning and late afternoons free for the things you would want to do, without having to look at the clock or mobile or check your mails. You deserve this time for a lazy movie in the couch with your family in the afternoons. I like to wake up late and step in my shower on a Sunday, toss some quick omelettes or pancakes and whirl up the smoothies for us and then step out for a nice family brunch with hardly any makeup on. Yes, ladies , let your hair loose and don’t think so much. Sometimes I like to cycle or go to a park and walk, a place where I don’t see anybody I know and feel one with myself. Some boating afternoons and bird watching with the kids and family make it a superb weekend, and if you have a romantic tea and some cake while boating (of course you will have to be super cautious about keeping your environment clean), which I usually carry in the basket, then you have achieved it, added to your well being, feel good factor, and yes, without a mention it goes, earned brownie points in the kid and hubby’s diary without a doubt. I completely love the sound of water and the birds when we go out boating and bird watching, it is so calming to the nerves and soothing to your senses, ahh!

Some time to organize too

I don’t know how you feel but my Sunday anxieties are also about not being prepared for the coming week and then overworking and getting drained on weekdays. So, although unwinding and taking time out to relax and breathe is a must yet it is of utmost importance to also prepare for the coming week.

My worries are the morning tiffins for all of us, what all will I pack, getting ready with groceries and keeping my refrigerator loaded with lots of things to snack on, being ready with my wardrobe so that there’s no room for confusion as to what are my social outings and my clothes for work and otherwise.
I prepare a menu for the mornings and school lunch box and accordingly stock up my fridge etc 🌭🌮🍥🍲🍯. It’s always great to organize your kitchen and get in control of stuff and even the wardrobes; if you are a working professional then the best day to get a relaxed pedicure or a spa is the weekend (unless you are a beauty blogger who gets invited to various treatmentsand this is a part of your work profile😀💄👛👠👄💅💃).
Unwind before you sleep

My idea to finish my day is to pick up a good book or hit the bath tub with some aromatic salts and scented candles with something to sip on (what ever suits your tastebuds) and soak in. This enlivens my senses and makes me so ready for a hectic Monday morning which is quite manageable, with no anger pangs or blues or feeling of over tiredness, if I have had a Sunday with organized and planned activity and planned inactivity too. Although I never like routines as I find it too monotonous to stick to a routine which is never changing yet I realise, that trying to stick to a certain schedule which you can keep varying weekly is not such a bad idea. So keep the blues at bay and have an awesome week ahead as you can supercharge yourself with few changes in your lifestyle which might initially take an effort but would slowly take you away from the anxieties and scaries which we all go through. Enjoy your morning cuppa, look at real people and things around you, breathe in the fresh air and leave your gadgets alone for initial hours of the beautiful morning. It is a new day in your life, celebrate it and cherish it and don’t take it for granted for it is surely a blessing.

Have a super charged weekend folks and be lofty all this week and enjoy the colourful spectrums ✨✨

Naman to the departed- Mahalaya Amavasya

lotus

pic

For Those who are physically nomore  but envelope our senses, soul and every breath, who define us, who are omnipresent metaphysically, for they exult, live and exist through our ideas , thoughts and ideals, they live through us eternally to infinity beyond space and time -Naman – A salute to the departed.

pic1

Namaskar!! 🙏.   Today is an auspicious day in the Hindu culture , the Mahalaya Amavasya, the final day of Pitr paksha ( which last for 15 days) and today the Pitr visarjan is performed all over India and abroad by the followers of Hinduism in honour of their ancestors who are no more. It is believed in Hindu tradition that there is life after death and the great Karna, who was the son of Surya and Kunti, when he died and reached the Yamaloka was offered a lot of gold and silver but never any food. Then he was told that since he was a daanveer ( one who does give donations) yet while donating to poor he only gave gold and ornaments and not food and hence he wasn’t given food in the otherloka ( the other world). Then, on his request, he was sent by Lord Yama to earth for these 14 days when he served a lot of food to the people also on the behalf of other departed souls. Hence these 14 days are observed as the days when it is believed that your ancestors visit you on earth and you are supposed to make offerings in the form of food to feed the departed soul. The ancestors bless you and their Ashirwad (blessings) makes people flourish and prosper.

pic3

Also since this is the harvest time in India so it is a way to offer the food grains in the form of pind to poor and the animals before we begin the celebration of Navaratri and Durgapuja. It is also believed that goddess Durga had killed all the demons today so it is an auspicious day and marks the end of somber period when you are supposed to pay homage to your beloved and respected ancestors as a mark of respect and recognition of what all they have given to us and passed on to us in the form of culture and legacy. So Mahalaya marks the end of this period thereby signifying the start of the celebrations and worship of Maa Durga.

Dear friends,It’s not been a fortnight when I lost my mother and having gone through the trauma, feelings of fear of losing my mother, periods of faith and hope coupled with hopelessness and darkness gripping at the same time when she was in the ICU, and finally seeing my fears come true ; then losing the faith in any superior powers to scepticism, to the end of this all by the Amavasya today ; Pitr Visarjan never meant as much to me as it does today. And hence I write on this tradition of thanking and offering salutations and prayers to those who did even pass on not only culture and value system and so much more but also their thought process, their ideas and ideals, their blessings. Today I pray to all of them and thank them for all I believe in , all my strength and specially my mother, my source of strength and inspiration for the spirit of life which should never be defeated.

Small Changes Will Change Your Life

ChangeYourLife1

ChangeYourLife4

ChangeYourLife3

“True life is lived when tiny changes occur.”
Leo Tolstoy

Change -Your Life2Routines can be a wonderful thing. Consistency brings comfort, and with comfort comes ease. Plus, we can become incredibly efficient at accomplishing the task at hand – cooking a meal, putting on makeup, traveling from one place to the next…

But there’s one thing about routines I’m not so fond of: They can easily place our minds elsewhere, closing us out from the goings-on around us. The monotony of doing the same thing again and again means we often don’t really have to think about what we’re doing, and instead our minds may choose to wander and wander until suddenly we’ve gotten from point A to point B with no recollection of the journey. And what matters, as they say, is the journey and not the destination. Since we don’t realise but it is the wonderful journey that maketh the life as we live, it imparts the feelings that compose our lives, the essence of life is hence in living  every moment and realising it at the same time , cherishing it and not in mechanical passage of time.

Today, take it upon yourself to make a change in your day. It doesn’t have to be huge, it just has to be different. The change itself may not affect your life immensely, but that one small alteration opens up a million possibilities – of faces to meet, of places to explore… And a few more small changes? Suddenly you’ll find yourself living in what seems like a whole new world. A world where new experiences seem to throw themselves at you, and you – with your new outlook – jump to take on each one.

So today, part your hair a different way or may be go for a new hair cut. That beautiful dress with the buttons down the front – flip it around and see if it works with the buttons in the back. Order your favorite tea – but from a brand new café. Don’t drive to work – ride your bike or take a public transport, talk to people who you don’t know, get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself.Jot down notes in script instead of print. Take a walk after lunch. Say hi to someone new. Watch that movie your friend keeps telling you about. Make dinner plans with your parents and gift them a bunch of flowers or may be a hand written note. Before you walk through your front door, look up towards the sky and thank the universe. In the evening, burn a stick of incense instead of lighting a candle. And why not volunteer to counsel or read out to people in hospitals . Do make some changes in life which force you to think of others apart from you, why not try and help out people who have nobody for them and not to mention it to anybody for the true happiness lies in giving and giving to those of us who are not so blessed. Change is the only constant according to Buddhist philosophy.

A simple cup of tea is far from a simple matter. My favourite thing to do on a rainy day is drink tea and read good words by amazing people.

“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea”. – Henry James

Tea brings people together in ways that you couldn’t imagine and its magic is something that is hard to describe in words. For each individual the ceremony of tea is personal and cannot be duplicated.

However, there is a bond between tea drinkers all around the world, no matter what decade they were born in, what nationality or personal beliefs. We speak the same language and empathize with each.

The idea of tea to most of us is a lovely experience in a patio with hot snacks. And to top it all if it’s a rainy afternoon and I’m with my best of pals there is nothing that could beat this or even come close to it. And this happened the afternoon when the effervescent Aishwarya and the communication head of Shangrila , the gorgeous Shamira invited me for the “chai ki thadi “, a high tea at Shangri-la hotels, an affair to remember along with my beautiful friend Anu and handsome Ashish aka lucky.

Chai for me is more than chai, it has to be served in the best of China and crockeries, and the ambience is something which should never go wrong. And to say the least, Shangrila champions in these departments of the interiors, the ambiance, the service. I am sure it was one of the most memorable afternoons spent laughing, chatting( you can read gossiping) and munching delicious snacks and mouth watering mousses along with friends, and to add  to it all was the awesomely romantic weather. Yes, it was raining and as we sat in the grand lobby of Shangrila which is all French Windows and glass everywhere, we could enjoy the sight which was so amazing, Rains and more rains, and here inside it was tea and more cutting chai, freshly brewed right there in front of you and served with so much warmth and style that it makes the whole tea experience exotic.

The chai ki thadi is happening everyday till 5 pm at Lobby Lounge the Chai Adda with Shangrila’s specialty “Chai ki thadi”.

This is priced at INR 700 Vegetarian and INR 770 plus applicable taxes with unlimited serving of the menu for the day and Masala Chai.

  • Coleslaw Chicken sandwich
  • Dry fruit Samosa
  • Cookies
  • Blueberry Mousse
  • White & Dark Chocolate Mousse
  • Scones
  • Savouries ( Masala peanuts, Murukku and Corn Mixture )

Although tea is my first love and wine second and I can go on writing or reading a book with any number of cups of tea and hence can go on writing yet I would want to finish this with the wise words of– C. S. Lewi0 “You can’t get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me.”

Happy tea time all you folks.

Over the course of human history, wine has received its fair share of  lauds, praise, almost even worship. It’s arguably the most beloved beverage in the world. Although I realise that wine rises steeply above a mere “beverage” in the minds and hearts of many of us wine lovers…

“Nothing more excellent or valuable than wine was every granted by the gods to man.” – Plato

Wine has been a part of civilized life for some several thousand years. It is the only beverage that feeds the body, soul and spirit of man. To take wine into our mouths is to savor a droplet of the river of human history. Wine is a living thing. It is made, not only of grapes, but of skill and patience. When drinking it, we must remember that to the making of that wine has gone, not only the labor and care of years, but the experience of centuries. Wine has a unique and mystical quality to it, and every bottle is a surprise and if it has been aged well ,it’s sublime. And thus wine is, for me, sacred love.

Recently I had the privilege to visit one of the world’s best winery , The Pillitteri estate winery, in Niagara on the lake, Ontario, which takes the pride of producing the best of icewines and the table wines worldwide, with its beautiful estates running and stretching over and extending its arms to the world offering the best, most exotic and loveliest wines anybody would have ever had.

Vineyards

We were taken around the breathtaking property, the vineyard and the bunches of enticingly, juicy grapes were all over on the vines which were clinging on and entwined.

The staff was so cheerfully explaining each and every step of the process involved from picking, harvesting to wine making, and I must say, the staff was so informative. I came to know that if the weather dips only for short periods, to save the grapes big fans called cannons are used. Cold air collects on the ground and it might freeze the grapes, so in order to avoid this, the fans blow warmer air from above down into the vineyards to keep frost from forming.

Interestingly we noticed there was a rose shrub planted at the onset of every row of grapevine, and we thought it must be surely for the beauty factor that it is such; no sooner were we informed that these rose shrubs are the most sensitive ones to any kind of infections and hence if there is any kind of breakout then it is these roses which show the first signs and hence the crop can be saved by monitoring or rather rejected completely too.

The Pillitteri family estates consist of 5 vineyards, the first of which was planted in 1965 by Gary Pillitteri, owner and proprietor of the winery. The most common grape varietals grown in the Niagara Peninsula are Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Gewurztraminer, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir. These wines are fun, fresh and easy-drinking. Easy to pair with food, or perfect for drinking alone, the versatility, the quality, of these wines makes them perfect for any occasion. These wines are made from grapes from the home estate vineyards. Each vineyard and wine is treated individually since each has its own ‘personality’ that must be expressed.  The Pillitteri estate produces consistent, quality wine: rich, full-bodied reds; fragrant and lively whites, all in a variety of styles to suit every palate. Popular blends include Gewurztraminer Riesling and Cabernet Merlot. These wines express the essence of the Pillitteri’s winemaking philosophy; “To produce the finest wines possible from the highest quality Niagara Peninsula grapes.” Single varietal red wines are only produced in years which meet their strict winemaking and minimum growing degree day standards.

Then we were guided to the cellar where the old world meets the new. The cellar was full of oak barrels. Romans used oak barrels since they were readily available, wine was safer to drink and more nourishing than the water during the times of war and this accidental discovery, which has become a norm now, was a pleasant one. The Oak barrels impart the new, pleasant quality to the wine. The contact with the wood made the wine softer and smoother, and with some wines, it also made it better tasting. Due to the minimal toasting of the wood, wines developed additional scents such as cloves, cinnamon, allspice or vanilla, and when drunk they had additional flavors present, such as caramel, vanilla or even butter and hence this pleasant accidental discovery has become a practice to age the wines.

In 2006, Pillitteri Estates Winery’s founders Gary and Lena Pillitteri commissioned the creation of the 23 stainless steel chairs which now hang on the walls of barrel cellar. The chairs symbolically tell the story of the past, present and future of the Pillitteri family, and add a “new world” element to the barrel cellar’s old world ambiance.

After the tour of the vineyards and the manufacturing unit, finally we were taken to the tasting room, where our journey started with table wines, made from the home grown varieties of grapes, and ended with the icewines, being the signature production of wines in Canada. My love for red wine made me go for the Reds, tannins while my partner tried some white wine. The tasting menu was laid on the table along with the food pairings.

Canada’s Gift-Icewine

Icewine is a sweet wine produced from grapes naturally frozen on the vine and pressed while frozen at -8oC. Ontario’s microclimate is uniquely suited to the annual production of Icewine as warm summers allow grapes to ripen while cold harsh winters allow natural freezing on the vine. Ontario produces 80% of the world`s Icewine and is the market lead in the category.

Icewine is a Pillitteri flagship product. Half of the wine produced at Pillitteri is Icewine. Typical aromas of Icewine include apricot, honey and citrus for whites and cherry, strawberry, and chocolate for reds. Icewine makes an excellent dessert wine and pairs with many savory foods like cheesecake. Pillitteri Estates Winery is the world’s largest estate Icewine producer.

Reserve icewine

Reserve Icewines are available in 13 varieties, more than any other winery in the world, including some exclusively available at Pillitteri. Reserve Icewines undergoes maturation in oak barrels. Like table wines, Icewine matures and gains complexity and aromas from oak. All Pillitteri reserve classified Icewine is placed in custom designed bottles embossed with 24kt. gold.

For an Icewine to reach reserve classification it must meet a minimum of 38 degrees Brix at harvest. In addition, reserve Icewine meets strict winegrowing and winemaking standards: residual sugar, acidity and alcohol must be balanced in perfect harmony. As told by the staff which was so informative and took us around the vineyard, it is just one drop that is used from every single grape that goes into making a reserve ice wine, thereby making it so exotic and expensive at the same time. The flurry of icewine harvesting begins when temperatures across the peninsula had finally sunk to below –8°C for at least a few hours. That’s the outdoor threshold needed before the frozen berries can be harvested, pressed and fermented into the sweet icewine delicacy.

This sheer love for making the most exclusive and exotic of stuff and the sheer grit and hard work that goes into the winemaking makes, wine tasting personally, even more wonderful and cherished an experience for me and with every sip I take in my mouth I realise the beauty of every drop of wine, the mercy of bountiful Mother Nature, the power of determination; and I realise that the romanticism which lies in the essence of gifting a wine to the loved ones can only be felt in a place like this when you know that we reap the harvest of love’s labour that should never be lost with time, the fruits of love and labour, the essence of romanticism, the poetry of love, the beautiful discovery of humankind, the Wine.

Wine tasting and its etiquettes

Episode 1

wine-tasting1

There are no special skills needed for wine tasting – just an open mind and your tastebuds. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your wine tasting experience.

Look at the colour

Although you might be tempted to immediately take a sip, resist for a moment and look at the wine. Tilt the glass and look at it against a white background or in good light.A white sleeve is s good idea or placing it under a bulb. What do you see?  Red wines vary greatly in colour. As they age, you will see hints of reddish-brown around the edges.  White wines become more golden as they age.  Generally speaking, the darker the wine, the more full-bodied the taste. If the wine is looking hazy, you can immediately get a new bottle opened in any of the places and they would readily do it.

wine-tasting2

Swirl and sniff

Swirl the wine around the glass (hint: it’s easier if you set it down on a table first). This allows the wine to release its aromas and vapourizes the alcohol.  Take a sniff and try to identify what you smell.  The nose can detect thousands of flavours and the tongue only four, so much of wine is on the nose.

wine-tasting3

Taste the wine

Finally. Take a small amount in your mouth, swirl it around and keep it there for a brief period. Sweetness comes from the tip of your tongue, bitterness on the back.  Acidity on the side. Is the wine sweet, acidic, crisp?  Is it light or full-bodied?  How does it finish?  Are you still tasting it five, ten or more seconds afterward?  Did the taste change as the wine finished? What flavours can you detect?

wine-tasting4

Focus on the feel

When tasting wines, the feel is the touch of the wine on your tongue.  Is it rich and full?  Lean and light? Are there bubbles? Does it tingle at the edges of your tongue?  Tannins, for example, will feel dry on your tongue, like biting into a grape seed or drinking very strong tea.

wine-tasting5

Spit it out

It’s okay to spit. In fact, you’ll be better able to taste more wines that way.  Wineries will provide a bucket (usually located on the tasting counter) for just that purpose.

Compare notes with your friends

Having trouble putting your finger on what flavours you’re tasting?  Ask the tasting room staff to describe the wine for you and see if you can match their description to what is floating around in your head.  Sometimes it will. Sometimes it won’t.  Wine tasting is a very personal experience – there are no wrong answers but it’s fun to compare notes with other people.

wine-tasting6

Dump it out

It’s not necessary to finish your entire sample.  When you’ve tasted enough, it’s perfectly okay to pour it out into the spit bucket.  It’s not a sign you didn’t enjoy what you were poured.  It’s a sign you’re ready to move on to your next sample.

Cleanse your palate

Eat crackers or plain white bread between tastings.  They’ll clear your palate and allow you to taste your next wine with more clarity.  Too many samples without a cleanse will overwhelm your palate.

wine-tasting7

So this is going to be followed by the wine tasting tour, which I thoroughly enjoyed the previous day, at one of the biggest wine selling and wine making brands, their vineyard tour and the manufacturing unit, the Pillitteri Estate winery, at Niagara on the lake, where I had an amazing experience.
